Porsche Cayman

I stopped by the Porsche dealer to see what all the fuss about the new Porsche is all about. I did not get a chance to test drive it (of course), so I can only give my cursory, amateur styling review.

The Cayman can be simply, but inadequately, described as a hardtop Boxster. At a passing glance you would be forgiven for mistaking the Cayman for a late model Carrera. If you pay close attention to your subconscious, however, you will notice that something doesn’t quite jibe. There are subtle flowing contours that do not exist on recent Carrera incarnations. These contours are derived from the Boxster, but with the hardtop in place, the fender humps of the Boxster flow sensuously into the roof.

The Boxster and Cayman siblings now further depart from the Carrera in their details (most noticeably, elements of the front facia). The family resemblance is still there, but neither the Boxster/Cayman pair’s nor the Carrera’s styling diluted by plagiarizing from each other.

My favorite vignette is looking at the C-pillar straight on from the side (more straight on from the picture included here). It reminds me of the C-pillar of a Ferrari 550 Maranello.
